2015 Opening Keynote: Michael Kimmel
We’re very excited to announce that, thanks to the efforts of Title Sponsor Dove Men+Care, our opening keynote speaker is Michael Kimmel!
If you’re interested in the trajectory of the modern man, you need to have Dr. Kimmel’s work on your nightstand. Dr. Kimmel is among the leading researchers and writers on men and masculinity today. And as Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University, where he directs the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities, Dr. Kimmel has a strong appreciation for exhaustive data and a singular talent for presenting it in a cohesive, engaging way.
Dr. Kimmel is the author of more than 20 books, but if you’re just getting familiar with his work, you can start with these three:
- His groundbreaking Manhood in America: A Cultural History (1996), which Publishers Weekly described as “pointing the way toward a redefinition of manhood that combines strength with nurturing, personal accountability, compassion, and egalitarianism”;
- His best-seller, Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men (2008), which investigates the lives of more than 400 young men whose social rudderlessness prolonged their adolescence; and
- His most recent book, Angry White Men (2013), which examines the social impact of various groups of men who believe they are the new victims of discrimination in America.
Dr. Kimmel has lectured at over 300 colleges and universities, and offered presentations at many of the world’s leading corporations on engaging men in support of gender equality. He’s the real deal, and we’ve got him!
We’re very excited to have Dr. Kimmel open our conference, and we’re especially grateful to Dove Men+Care for making it happen!
