When we asked for our first Dad Blogger Spotlight submissions just over three years ago, we wanted to assert consistently that writing is the underlying skill for so much of what our community wants to accomplish. No matter what form it takes, or what platform it occupies, the story is always the thing. And we wanted to celebrate that at each Summit with five mainstage readings.
Trouble is, now that the quantity and quality of DBS submissions have improved so remarkably (this year’s decision will be particularly tough), we know that five readings just isn’t enough anymore. That’s why we’re proud to announce our first-ever Porchlight DadSLAM event at Dad 2.016!
If you’re a fan of our weekly Porchlight Posts segment of our Fatherhood On Friday posts, you know the inspiration for the name. And if you’re as big a fan of the MOTH StorySLAM as we are, you know the format DadSLAM will take. Basically, it will be an open mic event, where attendees will be selected at random to read a piece (whether you’ve published it before or are workshopping it for the future) for a supportive and appreciative crowd.
We’ll publish more details as the event develops; all we know now is that it’s tentatively scheduled for Friday night, February 19, from 9:30pm to 11pm ET. Beyond that, how the night develops will depend on where you (and host John Kinnear) take it! Sonnets? Skits? Songs? Dramatic readings of your grocery list? As of now, the only thing we’re expecting is a heaping dose of Whatever.
If you’ve got ideas of what to present, get ’em ready to SLAM!
